About the Project

This website is intended to provide up-to-date information and practical tips to smokers interested in quitting smoking.

The website was developed within the framework of the Scientific Co-operation between Eastern Europe and Switzerland 2013-2016 (SCOPES) joint research project entitled ‘“Training physicians for smoking cessation counselling in Armenia and Czech Republic: a pilot project”. In Armenia, the project was implemented by the School of Public Health of the American University of Armenia in cooperation with the University of Geneva with support from the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF) and Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC).

We implemented a pilot training of medical residents of the Yerevan State Medical University in Yerevan, Armenia to build their capacity to provide smoking cessation counselling and treatment to smoking patients.  This pilot intervention was adapted from a training course developed in Switzerland a decade ago (see the References).

Medical Residents’ Training on Contemporary Approaches in Counseling and Treatment of Tobacco Addiction.

The project trained 37 medical residents specialising in cardiology, gastroenterology, pulmonology or internal diseases at the Yerevan State Medical University Hospitals (2015). The training used active learning methods, such as standardised patients (actors), role plays, group discussions and immediate feedback by the trainer, to build smoking cessation counselling skills.  The trainees were provided also with a set of brochures for patient education.
